Here are the 10 best-paid emerging professions in the last five years, according to studies by LinkedIn and the World Economic Forum:

Data Scientist

In 2012, Harvard Business Review published an article proclaiming data scientist as the “Sexiest Job of the 21st Century”.

According to Hayashi et al, data science is a concept to unify statistics, data analysis, informatics, and their related methods to understand and analyze phenomena.

Topping the list of emerging jobs for three years, we can expect the demand for professionals in this field to grow in the years to come.

Artificial Intelligence Specialist

Artificial intelligence positions cover different specialisations within the industry such as AI engineering. In the last four years, the hiring of AI personnel has increased by 74%.

Robotics Engineering

A subset of mechatronics engineering, which integrates mechanical, electrical, robotics, and computer engineering – this interdisciplinary field involves design, operation, construction and use of robots. It is an interdisciplinary field that brings together computer science and engineering.

The demand for professionals in this field has been on the rise as the robotics industry grows.

Data Engineering

Not to be confused with data scientists, data engineers are responsible for the paring and preparation of data for analytical or operational purposes. These professionals are the intermediary between data scientists and data analysts. They develop, construct, test, and maintain architectures such as databases and large-scale processing systems.

Since 2015, the hiring rate of these specialists has increased by 35% and will be increasing in the coming years.

Full Stack Developer

Full-stack developers are engineers who can handle all the work of clients, databases, servers, and systems engineering – also known as the jack of all trades. Hiring for this position in the past six years has increased by 35% per year.

Site Reliability Engineer

This discipline incorporates aspects of software engineering to infrastructure and operations problems with an aim to create scalable and highly reliable software systems. With today’s modern technology and the improvements to come, the demand for professionals in this field will continue to be on the rise.

Customer Success Specialist

In the past three years, jobs related to customer success has grown by 34%. According to LinkedIn, these specialists have a hybrid of soft and hard skills required to master technology as well as maintain long-term business relationships. Most of these professionals are within the software and information technology industry.

Given the growth of technology services, we can expect the demand for these professionals to grow in the coming years.

Sales Development Representative

Sales development representatives are responsible for outbound sales prospecting and mainly focus on generating and qualifying new leads in the early stages in the sales funnel. The importance of this job lies in the continuous growth of technology services of sales specialists to find new clients.

Behavioural Health Technician

Behavioural health technicians work directly with patients to implement the prescribed treatment plan. They specialize in providing care for patients of various mental illnesses, behavioural problems, or developmental disorders.

The employment for this role is projected by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics to grow by 12% from 2018 to 2028, which is faster than the average for all occupations.

Cybersecurity Specialist
